Imagine you are riding along the spectacular Northern Ireland coastal road; it’s dry, sunny and it snakes away like a demented rollercoaster… And the uniformed officer behind you on the Beemer is inviting you to “make progress”!

No, this is not some wishful daydream but the reality of my session with the Northern Ireland BikeSafe team. Having been to the London BikeSafe course, I knew roughly what to expect and the welcome we received was just as relaxed, professional and friendly – even though these guys are fully armed!

I was paired with PC. Mark Anderson, who talked me through the exercise and took the time to establish my riding experience so he could set the appropriate pace. I could swear there was a glint in his eye when he heard I wasn’t a complete novice. The briefing was straightforward – “ride as you would normally and don’t worry about me behind you. Observe the posted speed limits… And make progress on the nationals” How could I refuse!

Our chosen route was completely different to anything found in our cozy patch of England. Instead of leafy, overgrown country lanes we were soaring over high cliffs and rocky outcrops, taking each series of twists, dips and turns in one fluid motion – and trying not to gawp too much at the amazing scenery.

Some of the hints and tips offered by PC. Anderson were very worthwhile and relevant to riding in this type of country, such as looking beyond the apex of bends in open terrain with low stone walls and spotting other traffic much sooner. If you’re ever in Northern Ireland, try to ride the coast road and get in touch with the BikeSafe team, both highly recommended!

I want to go faster, I want to go faster..
