This is I suspect going to be a hot topic however! My rant is, does the national speed limit exist any-more. I ride to work every day along the same route and have done this route for about 3 and a half years. My route used to be about 60% national limit and the rest was 30's for villages but this seems to be changing.

Part of my route is wonky crossroads at Effingham Park which incidentally is now a brand new roundabout (watch out for the drain covers though, see other post) but at the time that they added the roundabout they have also changed the speed limit down from the national is used to be to 40 about a half mile on the 4 roads going into the roundabout.Confused Confused

Are we all morons now and need to be told that you have to slow down for a roundabout?? Confused Confused

I am a great believer in the 30 limit in town and villages, being the old fart with 2 kids I think people should be nice and slow where there are kids around as kids do not think!!! I get funny looks sitting on a sports bike doing 30 through villages, holding up the cars behind who would rather speed through them..ThumpUp

However outside of populated areas I know the arguement is that going slower stops crashes but I have to agree to some point that there is only so far you can go, why not just stop road traffic and make everyone use the pathetic public transport system??

Is it just me?? I also suspect that they goal seems to be to make the country a 40 mph limit, but thats another rant :)

RANT OVER Hmmmmmm Flapper

I want to go faster, I want to go faster..

A lot of the speed limits are bought in for cost reasons and bugger all to do with road safety. Councils are not obliged to maintain 50mph roads to the same standard as the national speed limit routes. If they were really bothered about accidents, they may consider repairing the roads rather than wasting money and effort on poxy signs all the boy racers ignore anyway.

The state of the roads is currently dreadful after the snow and ice plus all the rain in the autumn. I never understand how larger countries such as Spain and France have such higher standards of tarmac, even in rural regions. Maybe it's because bankers and politicians syphon off all our taxes before they can be used for something constructive!!

I seem to remember hearing that if a problem is reported to the council with the roads then they are legally responsible for any damage to a vehicle as a result if they do not fix it. Similarly surely they are also responsible for any injuries as a result which is more likely with a bike!! Anyone know anymore about this?? Confused

It seems that its not only major routes that are being hit for speed reductions. I love riding through the lanes where some months ago they were 60mph, I have noticed over the winter months even these have been down graded to either 50-40 and even 30, why?
No houses, kids, schools, just fields full of sheep and cows, trees and grass, why should they reduce the speed limits here, after all there's no voters to appease.

I did bike safe last year, and they were adamant they wanted to reduce speeds and also concentrate on the sports bike boyz, to reduce accidents apparently.
So there could be some sort of joint effort by the local authorities and the police to ruin what has been left for us bikers to enjoy! (s*****w)

Lets see what happens in europe regarding the 100bhp laws they want, and like Germany already have. I'll have a C90 please(with Noz Flapper )

I read it in MCN or something similar last week, its not the first time that it has been on the agenda, Germany or France (I cannot remember which) have that law already in place, and a friend of mine who has a bikers hotel in the Hartz Mountains( more on that in a later post) says that the TUV in Germany are hard on bikes when it comes to the annual test and effectively if that nice little 3 into 1 hasn't got a TUV approval it has to be changed for the test, that includes screens etc.

You can add the section through Boreham Street, there used to a be a 60 mph section which is now 40, the 40 is now a 30mph, another one bites the dust.

This is getting crazy, maybe the time is coming for bikes to rebel - Problem is no one out there is interested in allowing speed limits to be increased!!!!

I have a new site that I am building at the moment and will shortly be doing a review of iPhone aps for bikers as there are some good ones for finding good routes!! Not sure if it allows for speed limits, I suspect not and so app writers out there, here is an idea!!!!

I will now go off and try and find an app that updates on all speed limits. Do the government have to list them online somewhere or should we do a freedom of information request!!

I want to go faster, I want to go faster..

We live in uncertain times and as each law is made, we the people of this septic isle have to take our chances.
Apparently Labour brought in over 1100 new laws during their term in government, yet they are never published publically for us to see in full, so we the poor buggers who have to pay the fines for breaking laws we didn't know existed.
I for one would like to see the government responsible to ensure that every citizen has a written noticed provided to tell us what laws have been introduced, then there is no excuse from either side. It would how ever make it a boom time for opticians, as people flood to get reading glasses to read the very small, small print.
Next week I expect to be stopped and warned for a section 999 offence subsection 5a.
That is looking at tottie in a convertable whilst sitting at a red traffic light whilst listening to radio 2!!! (only joking it could be section 123321123A, but it could in reality be a law somewhere in this weird world)

you have never spoken a truer word. I am a similar sinical person and think that all politicians are crooks and sadly if you have money you get what you want, if you do not then you either need a massive objection and the money to back it up or get loads of people to stop the rich people from making more money for a brief time, such as bikes shutting down London!

I have decided to send the government a few bob just to cover the offences that I committed this morning even though I didn't know I had, so that should help reduce our debt, and help them buy another case of wine for thier important visitors.Cursing
