After many years’ trusty service, my Akito winter gloves were giving up the ghost. I tend to use one pair of gloves throughout the British “winter” ie around eleven months of the year. Therefore they must be just right and several well intentioned purchases from bike shows have preceded my Akitos to the old glove box with only a brief career. They just haven’t fitted spot on. So when I was lucky enough to be offered a new pair for my birthday, I knew I had to get the choice right. Must be a good tight fit but with plenty of flexibility. Waterproofing now is a given with the availability of modern materials, but this needs to actually work.
They must have good protection, not be too thick for spring and autumn but warm in winter and let the heat of my grips come through. Well after the coldest winter since mammoths roamed Sussex, the Spada Enforcers pass on all fronts. They appear to well made, are waterproof and warm enough for most conditions. The leather is padded in the right places and carbon protectors finish the gloves off nicely. There’s even a visor wiper on the left thumb. These are £54.95 from The Bikerstore and I think that’s pretty good value...ask me in 2020.
This is more of a preview than a review but as the summer is on its way, I thought some appropriate gloves may be of interest. The Bladerunner Rhino gloves are made of goatskin leather, polyester and have a 100% Kevlar lining, very much the current biking material in fashion. They are a short glove with a velcro strap and no armour. They are advertised as anti-slash material, so handy if you are in a knife fight while out and about. On first putting them on, the palm section is fairly stiff, though I imagine this would bed in after some use, hopefully. The advantage would appear on those very warm days when light weight and breathability are the key features. Wear them with your Kevlar jeans and retro leather jacket down to the coast...
They cost £56.92 plus VAT. Bladerunner Rhino from
