I want to do an advanced course, maybe that is not the best description, but further leanring. I have seen around the BikeSafe Course and even got an inlaw to agree to pay for it in a hope that it will mean I am less likely to die on the road Blink

There is one in London or other locations, does anyone have any experience of these courses> What are they like? Is it fun? I think they are run by the local constabulary so does that mean you have to watch your back and check all on the bike before going etc/????

For those out there looking for a new challenge, to lose weight or to just learn something new then have you thought about Taekwon Do? Hear is my Taekwon Do Training Diary as it is a great thing to take up. Great excercise, ethos as well as self defense.

The Bikesafe course is great and superb value. I would thoroughly recommend it. I have done a couple of other advanced courses and this is as good as any, if not better. Don't worry about the police aspect, they are doing it as bikers and are not out to get you, it's not intimidating after the first couple of minutes of being followed by a copper!

I have friends that are observers with "Kent Advanced Motorcyclists" and "London A M". I guess there's a Sussex equivalent. You would join as a pupil and these guy's ride behind and give tips. I think you have to pay for their fuel. Much the same as the BikeSafe but without the copper.

Life presents many paths. If you chose the path to BMW or Harley ownership, you only have yourself to blame.

Just re-read the article on the London Bikesafe in Edition 4 of SEB. Sounds like a good day out with the professionals. Guaranteed to improve my riding and food included. Just needs good company to make a top day.

Anyone else interested in doing it as an SEB group?

HI Hooter

I am up for that. Hope we can get some more people and then do a group effort, here is the link to some more information about the day with Pete from the Mag went and had a go. I spoke with the guys at Bikesmart at the bike show a month ago and they seem a really good bunch and so think it would be a good laugh.
I might see if we can set up a link somewhere more obvious to highlight this trip if people want to join in.

Here is the link though

After many (!) years of riding I decided to do a Bikesafe course last year.

My reasoning was:
a) you can always learn new stuff
b) you shouldn't be so complacent to think you can't
c) I wanted to see if there was anything I needed to improve on
d) and even if the answer to c) was 'not really', I thought it'd be good to know that too!

I did the course with Surrey plod out of Dorking and a fine bunch they were. I was paired up with lad from Crawley on a ZX6R and the copper was on an unmarked R6! We went as far as Petworth then down to Goodwood and back up to Dorking.

Overall a good day out and one that I'd recommend, but to be totally, totally honest, the greatest benefit of the course will be for those who have recently passed their tests, or who have returned to biking after a few years off. As mentioned, I found it really good, but if you are aware of roadcraft, positioning, hazards etc etc and have years of experience you're probably doing most of it right for most of the time.

However, if it saves any of us from having an 'off' or worse - then it's worth the time and money - every time!

All my family have now completed the Bike Safe course, and we would recommend it, its now being accepted on insurance websites.
Had a great day and met some nice people, the police were great, even pulled over a driver who nearly took my wife out in Rye, great to see them in action protecting their pupils, and the driver left the scene looking very sheepish.
They used to run them at weekends, but Sussex Police have changed them to week days apparently to leave them free to concentrate on catching speeding bikers at the weekends.
Look up the course dates on the web, you'll need to book early though, as they sell out quickly.
