At South East Biker we like to feature local motorcyclists and their sports. Some of these are established stars, others are just starting out, dreaming of future glory. Here’s a selection of some of the ups and downs of the region’s riders.
Danny Webb - After a mixed season in125GP, Danny has signed a two year contract with the Jack and Jones sponsored WRB team. Danny now has the chance to prove himself on a top bike. Javier Sabio, the team manager, decided to sign Danny “because of his enormous enthusiasm and natural riding talent”. Danny finished in 13th at Phillip Island, 10th at San Marino, 11th at Indianapolis, 16th at Brno, 8th at Jerez, 11th at Motegi, 8th at the Sachsenring and 9th at Losail, finally finishing 17th in the championship. The highlight of the season was leading the Japanese GP for more than half of the race until his full wet tyres began to cause problems on a drying track.
James Webb - Riding the Padgett’s Honda in the British Supersport championship, James had a disappointing season. Funding issues led to him changing teams for the final rounds. Plans for 2010 are unclear as yet.
Rowan Miller - A couple of injuries, namely two broken arms, put paid to a large chunk of Purbrook based Rowan’s season. A promising start in the Thundersport GP championship and NGRRC series saw Rowan riding high, but a crash at Pembrey and another injury on his return interrupted the rest of the year. Rowan described his season as “unfortunate”! Those races he competed in whilst fit showed his potential and he is looking to 2010 for more success. During the winter he will be riding a pit bike at Angmering to keep fit and keep his hand in. Rowan will be competing both in Spain in the highly competitive CEV series and in the UK in BSB aboard the MOTO-UK 125 GP bike.
Shane Hazelden - Rising speedway star Shane had an impressive season, aiming to be riding in the National League which he achieved, appearing for Newport. After two big crashes in 2007 and 2008, an autumn operation saw Shane restored to full fitness. He is pleased to report 2009 exceeded expectations. The winter sees a total rebuild of the bike and five days a week fitness sessions (to which he is dragging his dad Garry).
The 2010 season kicks off on March 15th with Shane riding for Rye House in the National League. Based in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, the team will give Shane a real chance to show off his potential. He will also be racing at other events around the country. Keep up with his progress via
